If you think Kamen Rider is just a kids' show fighting monsters, you might need to change your mind after watching Kamen Rider Zero-One, a series that presents hot-button issues of the digital age like AI, robots, and the meaning of being human, through the story of a young company president who must become a hero to protect both humans and Humagears.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

The story begins in an era where Humagear robots are created to help humans, but suddenly they turn into rampaging monsters. Hiden Aruto, a young man who dreams of becoming a comedian, finds himself taking over as president of Hiden Intelligence after his grandfather's death, along with the Zero-One Driver that gives him the power to transform into Kamen Rider. Aruto must fight a mysterious organization that seeks to destroy Humagears, while also protecting his own dreams and creating a future where humans and AI can coexist.

Acting and Characters

Fumiya Takahashi as Aruto brilliantly portrays brightness and determination. His performance makes the audience truly believe in the character's dreams. Noa Tsurushima as Izu, the secretary robot, does well in expressing emotions that seem simple yet complex. Additionally, Ryutaro Okada as Fuwa Isamu and Hiroe Igeta as Yua Yaiba add depth to the story with their inner struggles. Villains like Jin and Horobi also have interesting backstories, making viewers sympathize with them at times.

Direction, Visuals, and Music

The director and team did a great job balancing thrilling fight scenes with heartfelt drama. The CGI of Humagears and transformations is beautifully rendered for the era. The music by Go Shiina enhances every scene, especially the opening theme 'REAL×EYEZ' which perfectly fits the series' theme.

Editorial Analysis

The most interesting aspect of Zero-One is how it questions 'What makes us human?' through characters like Aruto, who clings to dreams and connections with Humagears. The series doesn't view AI as mere machines but gives them emotions and dreams as well. Although some episodes move too fast and certain plots drag, overall, Zero-One dares to address contemporary social issues such as unemployment due to automation and discrimination, which are rare in this genre.

Verdict

Kamen Rider Zero-One is more than just a hero action series. It has depth in thought and emotion, suitable for Kamen Rider fans and general audiences who enjoy action-drama stories. If you're looking for a series that's both entertaining and meaningful, Zero-One is the answer.
